Shannon Buggs, Chief Commons Director

An experienced and innovative communication strategist for higher education, healthcare and creative arts nonprofits, Shannon Buggs began her professional career as a daily newspaper reporter in Raleigh, N.C. She then worked for more than a decade as a Houston Chronicle business reporter and columnist, covering the airlines industry, banking and investment companies, and the nonprofit sector. Shannon’s passion for reading, writing and philanthropy led her to start in 2007 Meta-Four Houston, a poetry nonprofit promoting literacy and youth leadership. In 2012, she successfully merged Meta-Four into a larger literary arts nonprofit.

Shannon’s professional experience includes serving as Director of Communication for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston and as Director of Community and Public Relations at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. Her civic leadership includes serving as a mayoral appointee on the Houston Arts Alliance board of directors and as a member of the HAA Grants, Audit, Programs + Services, Capacity Building, and Folklife + Traditional Arts committees.

A sixth generation Texan and a native Houstonian, Shannon earned a bachelor’s degree in English and American literature and language at Harvard University, a master’s degree in journalism at Northwestern University, and a personal financial planning certificate at the University of Houston.
