POSITION DESCRIPTION | Finance Associate (full time, salaried)

CultureWorks is an emerging, national nonprofit “management commons” model — a platform for building and sharing essential financial and administrative support to sustain and strengthen the arts and culture sector. The Houston office is assisted by its national supporting organization, CultureWorks Commons Management, which facilitates our mission “to provide arts, cultural, and creative practitioners equitable access to the resources they need to flourish.”

 

Our opportunity:

CultureWorks Greater Houston seeks a seasoned bookkeeper to be its Finance Associate and a member of its Finance & Operations team. This position reports to the Finance Manager and works closely with the Finance Manager to develop and maintain the highest level of quality in service delivery for our fiscally-sponsored members, who participate in our shared, finance, legal, HR, compliance, and risk management (insurance) resources.

 

What the work is:        

  • Process and record all accounts payable transactions, cash disbursements, accounts receivable transactions, cash and credit card receipts, and donations for CultureWorks and its fiscally-sponsored projects to the general ledger system through an online accounting system.

  • Execute all procurement requests (Purchase Orders) for CultureWorks and, as requested, its fiscally-sponsored members.

  • Transmit information to payroll company.

  • Prepare and file sales tax returns.

  • Assist Finance Manager with month-end close by preparing account reconciliations, schedules or other analysis of general ledger accounts or allocations.

  • Support the Finance Manager in all aspects of their work, including budgeting; cash flow; vendor sourcing and contracting processes, policies, and practices; and overall operating capacity management.

  • Implement the financial and risk management policies and practices of CultureWorks. Maintain all vendor, customer and donor records.

  • Manage all compliance-related donor and funder acknowledgements, ensure that donor records are accurate and current, and prepare regular donor reports for CultureWorks Greater Houston and its members.

  • Support the annual regulatory and tax compliance processes, including audit preparation for CultureWorks.

  • Prepare annual 1099s for contractors.

  • Implement annual data entry and compliance with DataArts.

 

Who we’re looking for:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance or a related field

  • At least 5 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience

  • Bookkeeping and accounting training with certifications preferred, although a CPA license is not required

  • General knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fundraising, and operations

  • Familiarity with the arts, cultural and humanities fields, their business models and modes of operation

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and team collaboration skills

  • Proficiency in management technologies (Excel, CRMs, databases, Sage INTACCT and accounting software)
